A food intolerance is when the body has a chemical reaction to eating a particular food, drink, or additive / colouring etc. Food intolerances tend to show milder symptoms, and unlike allergies, cannot cause severe allergic reactions.
So there in lies our hidden problem - because allergies tend to show quite severe reactions, those who have them tend to know about it from a young age and therefore learn to read labels and avoid anything containing such foods.
