Food Intolerance vs Food Allergy Difference

14/4/2016

Comments

Quite simply; a food allergy occurs when the immune system reacts to a harmless food. A food intolerance is when the body has a chemical reaction to eating a particular food, drink, or additive / colouring etc. Food intolerances tend to show milder symptoms, and unlike allergies, cannot cause severe allergic reactions.
So there in lies our hidden problem - because allergies tend to show quite severe reactions, those who have them tend to know about it from a young age and therefore learn to read labels and avoid anything containing such foods.
But since food intolerances are milder, they can be less obvious to identify. In fact, it is estimated over 45% of adults suffer a food intolerance to something in their common diet.

Think about all the small digestive issues you may face:
  • bloating
  • bad breathe
  • lethargy or brain fog
  • reflux
  • heart burn
  • skin break out

And all the reasons that you could have blamed such conditions on:
  • Lack of sleep
  • Stressed
  • Too much take away / crap food
  • Might be getting sick
All these common reasons may actually be fooling you that it is in fact the food you are eating that is causing this!.. And the culprits can be traditionally 'healthy' foods like whole grains, seeds, nuts or my favourite irony - it may be the live and active probitic natural yogurt which is meant to help heal your gut!!

So a food intolerance is less severe, more common, but harder to identify. There are thousands of excuses we make for feeling less than optimal, but your first check should be your guts, particularly if you struggle to lose weight despite 'healthy' eating.

Read on to The Most Common Food Intolerances if you suffer any digestive problems or struggle to lose body fat. It's the first step I work on with new clients and more important than even their exercise. Health before fitness works best for your hormones, energy levels, sleep, and results.
